An apple grows well at an annual mean temperature of 7-14℃ [13-21℃ from April to October, and 26℃ or below during summer (June - August)], with a rainfall of less than 1,300 mm from April to October. If there is too much rain, the trees could become vulnerable to diseases and pests and produce low-quality apples. In fact, sunlight plays a very important role in the growth of the tree and the formation of flower buds. Therefore, lack of sunlight would result in poor flower buds and low-quality fruits.
Apples were first brought to Korea from China about 300 years ago. They have been farmed in Chungju since 1912. At present, apple orchards account for the greatest are of land use in Chungju.
